Often dogs are adopted by owners who don’t fully contemplate owning a pet. Dogs require a commitment by their owners. All dogs need training to know what is acceptable behavior and what isn’t. You can use this advice if you would like to train a dog you have adopted.
Use control when rewarding good behavior during dog training. When the dog correctly follows your commands, you can certainly give a reward. While you might be happy with this accomplishment, your excitement plus theirs can cause this situation to get out of control. Stay calm and expect the same from your puppy.
Be sure to keep your dog active and engaged a great deal of the time. Dogs can become bored very easily. Bored dogs are difficult to train. Your dog will pay better attention to commands, as well as play with you more, when he has been exercised properly. Get out for some long walks and runs with your dog.
Use the same command for the behavior you want him to demonstrate. First, say his name, then the command. This will get his attention, and then you can tell him what to do. Dogs that are properly trained will respond when their name is said.
When house-breaking your puppy, choose a specific phrase to use when it’s time to go outdoors. For example, you could use the phrase, “go potty” when you take them outside to help them remember what to do when you go outside and say the command.
Anytime your dog does something good, make sure you reward him. It is important that your dog is able to establish a connection between the command and the action that gains a reward. By rewarding your dog after it does something you want, it will realize that it’s doing a good thing. Therefore, it will be more likely to continue this good behavior.
Use the right size crate for effective crate training. Puppies will grow up quite quickly. Get a crate that is the right size for your dog when it gets older. Generally speaking, your pet should be able to circle, sit and sleep without discomfort.
Changing your tone to reflect emotions is useful in getting the point across to your pet. Your dog should be able to distinguish between varying tones you use for praise, commands and corrections. Keep your commands short and sharp while corrections should be louder.
During your training sessions, you should keep a close eye on the time. Dogs can only handle a short amount of training at a time, so don’t overdo it. This is why you need to limit the time of your training sessions to around 10 minutes.
Anxiety is what can cause a dog to chew things up. Dogs feel secure when enclosed in a safe place such as a dog crate. You can offer him a safe chew toy so he does not become bored while you are away.
The tone of your voice is important during training. You should have a different tone for commands, praises and corrections to help teach your dog the appropriate responses for each. Be firm and sharp with commands. Use a louder tone for corrections, and your natural voice for praise.
If you plan on housebreaking your pet, you must work hard to avoid any preventable mistakes. Learn to know the things your pet does when it needs to go. They may pace, sniff, whine or walk in circles. If you see your dog doing this, take action immediately. Get his leash so you can take him to the designated potty area. Give him praise when he eliminates correctly. They will eventually ask to go outside.
If you are consistent, you will be able to teach your furry friend to wait. Try taking your dog outside each hour when you’re at home. Praise lavishly for pooping and peeing outdoors. Don’t punish a puppy for pottying inside. Your dog knows no better, and your yelling is not going to change things. When it has an accident, take it out and show it where it should go.
Is your dog getting enough nutrition? Dogs who eat crummy, low quality food will show hyperactivity, distraction and disobedience. You might be surprised by how dramatically a change in diet can affect your dog’s behavior. Ask for your vet’s advice in regards to proper dog nutrition.
Know an older dog’s limits. It will not be possible to train a dog that is older perfectly. They all possess little quirks you should simply try to live with. By adopting older dogs, you may face stubborn streaks. Although you may be able to teach it some new things, sometimes the best thing to do is focus on the negatives that you want to modify and live with the rest.
Once you’ve figured out how this is done, then it is only a matter of time in which you will be able to teach your dog these tricks. Dogs love any opportunity to impress their owners, and owners always enjoy the pride that comes with training the animal successfully.
